What a beautifully evocative and texture rich piece. While I’ve never stayed in American motels, moved to Texas or lost a goat-friend, you managed to transport me to each of these moments in your life as if I was right there with you.
My dad was his own kind of Clydesdale. Less the strong, knowing, adventurous man of the road, more the artistic sort who knew exactly how to decorate a room, would sit and draw with us kids for hours, and captivated dinner parties by telling long, detailed jokes where the punchline was always worth the long walk. Reading about your father felt special because I can see that their shape is the same, their presence and effect, but the details are unique to them. It was nice to think about.
Anyway, thanks for sharing this piece, I only recently started following your substack but I’m very glad I did. Can’t wait to read more from you x
I was re-listening to the Belle Gibson episode while trying to find cat villagers for my sons Animal Crossing island when this popped up in my notifications bar. Pausing everything was absolutely worth it. Now, back to that devils anus that is Belle.
Ah! How beautiful and heartbreaking - no goat will ever be the same, but would you ever want to get an animal like that some day? A funky lil guy to come back to after the day's adventures
I think goats are very special, weird little animals. 10/10 would befriend them again. If I could recommend them here on Substack instead of newsletters, I would.
New question: have you ever been to a place called Goats on the Roof? Goat petting zoo & goat milk ice cream, with lore on how the goats are actually visitors from space

As fabulous as this sounds, I would be hard-pressed to visit Pigeon Forge again. Connor and I got SPOOKED on our last drive through.
There is also one in Georgia!
Recc cancelled apparently the Georgia location is permanently closed :(
How could you do this to me.
